I work in Danbury and live in Brewster. I like to ‘take the road less traveled’ so I use Route 6 for a portion of my trip – it is quiet, less crowded, and more picturesque – at least until the Stateline project gets built, then there won’t be a road less traveled.
Along this stretch of Route 6 there are a number of side roads that are remnants of the original path of the highway. I like to explore, so the other day I decided to check them out. During my jounrney, I came to a spot that offers easy access to fishing on NYC’s East Brach Reservoir. Some know it as Sodom Reservoir.
The fishing spot is on Branch Road. On a map, it is just north of the intersection of Route 6 and 121. A short walk from the pull-off area brings you to the fishing area, which has some concrete barriers building up the shorline – probably to avoid the mud and erosion that would occur otherwise. This is a perfect spot to take the kids for a short fishing excursion.
You need a DEC access permit, which is free and can be obtained via the DEC website. They love to ticket people that don’t have a permit. And the property is NOT designated as a hiking property, so make sure you have a fishing pole with you. And you also need to follow all the rules & regulations for fishing licenses, etc. You can find info on NYS fishing rules, including a link to purchase a fishing license online at :http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html .
