I just finished reading “When Our Town Was Young: Stories of North Salem’s Yesterday”. It was written by three years of seventh graders in the 1940’s. Very impressive! The booklet was sent to North Salem soldiers serving overseas during one Christmas in WWII.
It’s full of interesting details about the history of the town – the circus, old trolley lines, the cave of hermitess Sarah Bishop, the Leatherman, President Grant, Indian Burial Grounds, Major John Andre – the list goes on and on. In the back of the book there are three driving tours. Haven’t tried them yet, but I plan to. And I found some new places to track down – Sarah Bishop’s cave, the ruins of the abandonded North Salem-Danbury trolley, Major Andre’s Tablet, the Hangman’s Oak, John Wallace’s gravestone, and the old Indian burial ground.
