I just finished reading Sermons in Stone by Susan Allport. I was led to it by a Putnam County brochure I found a while ago that talked about Putnam’s stones. In the brochure was a quote from her book.
Even though I like stone walls alot, before I read it even I was wondering how an entire book on the subject could hold someone’s interest. Well, it can and it did. What an absolutely amazing, interesting book. If you live in Putnam, Dutchess, Westchester, or anywhere in the northeast where there are stone walls, you need to read this book.
The personal kicker for me what that she also mentions one of my other favorite places on earth, other than Putnam and surrounding communities – Martha’s Vineyard.
If you read this book, you will never look at a stone wall the same. Instead of just a pile of rocks, you will see history, purpose, structure and a story.
