There is a very cool rock formation – what looks like a ‘glacial erratic’ in the woods next to Brewster High School. The rock sits on a small ridge that drops into a swamp, and has broken apart to form “seats” with a tall backdrop.
I happen to live near the high school, so I pass this spot every day. In the summer, it isn’t visible, but when the leaves are off the trees you can see it from the road if you look carefully.
My youngest and I took a walk last week to check it out. From the beer cans and fading graffiti on the stones, it is obvious many of the students know of this spot. Regardless, it is one of those small wonders that we take for granted. This stone, which has sat there for millions of years watching time pass, probably got dropped there when the last glacier receded. Think about that for a moment. How cool!
To get there from the intersection of Farm to Market Rd and Foggintown Rd, take Foggintown Rd heading east. Just past the high school (you’ll see the tennis courts on your right) there will be a pull-off area on the left-hand side of the road. Walk into to woods and the rock formation sits a short distance into the wood. The whole visit took about 10 minutes, but it was nice to get on a beautiful spring day!
