One of the great things about Putnam, in addition to it’s natural beauty, is its close proximity to so many neat places. For example, Connecticut beaches like Sherwood Island and Jennings Beach are only an hour away from southeast Putnam County. And don’t forget New York City, the capital of the world!
On that note, I recently borrowed from the library the book “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge”. It’s a classic kid’s book from 1942 by HIldegarde H. Swift. It’s the story of a proud lighthouse that gets overshadowed by a massive, modern bridge, but still finds it’s purpose.
Read it to your kids, then take a drive down to NYC along the Henry Hudson Parkway. Right underneath the George Washington Bridge, you’ll find the real Little Red Lighthouse. Your kids will love it. Talk about books coming to life!
According the the Historic House Trust website, the lighthouse is open for tours.
