I just finished reading Hiking the Road to Ruins by David A. Steinberg. He is a fellow author who enjoys getting out and about – but he especially loves old ruins and mines. His book covers adventures in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and even Massachusetts and Maryland – but a number of his destinations are in Putnam County, such as the Cornish Estate north of Cold Spring and the Dennytown Mines in Fahnestock Park. A few more are just outside of Putnam, such as the Beacon Mountain Casino in Beacon, Cranberry Lake Preserve in North White Plains, the Army Tunnels in Blauvelt State Park in Rockland County, and the ghost town of Doodletown, the Dunderburg Spiral Railway, and the Island Pond Ranger Cabin – each within Harriman State Park which spans Rockland and Orange County on the other side of the Hudson. Three places I found especially intriguing are the Overlook Mountain Hose near Woodstock, NY, a place called The Pergola in Palisades Interstate Park in NJ, and Southford Falls State Park in CT.
