Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary General of the United Nations, was from Sweden, but for a while he spent his weekends at his home on Foggintown Rd in Brewster. It’s a white house, on a tight curve, and there is a historical marker on the stone wall in front of the house.

Her served as U.N. Secretary General from 1953 until 1961. President John F. Kennedy said he was “the greatest statesman of our century.” He died in plane crash in 1963 while on the job. Some say it was not an accident.

He received (posthumously) the Noble Peace Prize. Aside from numerous streets, buildings, and schools around the world being named after him, there is the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in New York City. In 2015, Sweden put his profile on their 1000-kronor banknote, the highest-denomination banknote in Sweden.
