Patterson, NY

For may years, this cemetery was ‘”lost”.  Overgrown and neglected, and with most of the gravestones nothing more that fieldstones, the burial ground sat hidden.  But, as of the first half of 2012, this cemetery is in the process of being reclaimed from nature under the direction of the Patterson Historical Society members and volunteers.

The cemetery is on Route 311, across from Brickhouse Road.  It has been referred to as both Old Revolutionary Burying Ground and Old Baptist Cemetery.  In an April 27, 2011 article on the Brewster Times titled, “230 Year Old Gravestone Unearthed” it was announced that the gravestone of Mary Ward Pell, who died in 1781, was found under six inches of soil.  The cemetery has been out of use for a long time, because the article goes on to say that William Pellatreu described it as already overgrown when he published his Putnam County history book in the late 1880s.
